David Ayer made his mark on the DC Extended Universe last year, with the release of Suicide Squad. The ensemble film developed a following - as well as an Oscar win - despite generally negative reviews from critics.
While talks of a sequel have occurred for quite some time, Ayer himself has not been attached to the project - instead focusing his DCEU efforts on Gotham City Sirens. And according to the director, there's a very good reason for that.
"It's a story about three fantastic women," Ayer explained in a recent interview with IGN during San Diego Comic-Con, "who're trying to find their way in the world, and realize that they have more power together than they do individually." He added, "I have daughters, and I want to create something that might be able to help them get along in the world a little bit."
While Ayer will be diverting slightly from Suicide Squad with Gotham City Sirens, as the film essentially functions as a spinoff for Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, it seems like he's done with the main franchise for the foreseeable future. In another SDCC interview, Ayer made comments about his most recent project, the Netflix sci-fi film Bright, that many took as a slight towards Suicide Squad.
With Ayer speaking so optimistically about Gotham City Sirens, here's hoping that some news about the film will be unveiled during Warner Bros. Films panel this Saturday.
