David Ayer appeared at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday to promote his new movie Bright, and he may have also taken a shot at one of his old employers.
While talking about the setting of the film, Ayer explained how real and gritty the world of Bright felt...even though it's populated by elves and orcs. "This movie is about LA, but a fucked up LA, but our world is fucked up," Ayer said. "This isn't some bullshit, produced PG-13 shit movie, I was able to do my thing."
Many took Ayer's comments as a shot against Ayer's last project, Suicide Squad, which was a "gritty" PG-13 film. While Suicide Squad was a box office success, it received miserable reviews and even Ayer admitted afterwards the film was flawed.
There were also rumors that Ayer faced immense pressure from Warner Bros while filming and editing Suicide Squad. Warner Bros. also declined to finance Bright, which led to Ayer approaching Netflix while finishing up Suicide Squad.
At least one positive came out of Suicide Squad for Ayer, as he re-teamed up with star Will Smith for Bright.
Ayer also commented on the freedom that Netflix and Bright allowed him. "This is a new kind of thing we are doing. It can comment on social issues, but using fairies and other things. This is some real shit."
Bright will be released on December 22nd on Netflix.
