Spoilers incoming for Wonder Woman: Steve Trevor #1, so if you haven't read the issue yet you've been warned.
As the name implies, this issue focuses almost entirely on Steve Trevor. Wonder Woman is involved early on and towards the end, but this is primarily a story about Trevor and his friends. Fans of the film will recognize those friends as panic attack prone Charlie, smooth operator Sameer, and the always resourceful Chief. Seeing them together again provided some delightful moments, but compared to all of them Trevor is sadly rather bland.
In fact, that goes for when he's around Diana as well, a duo that provides some of the best banter of the book (Diana: I was to understand there would be dinner and wine followed by flirting, light touching, and sexual tension. Sorry, I'm overly honest.). Diana is what makes them compelling though, a trait she shares with Trevor's teammates.
He does get his shining moment by issue's end though but in a similarly understated way. That seems to be the characters best trait really. The fact that he's dependable, trustworthy, and always putting others first. That penchant for goodness might explain why he feels so guilty all time, a point of focus in the issue.
Art wise the book is solid, especially when Wonder Woman's bright color palette is on the page. It doesn't launch the story into another stratosphere, but it does efficiently convey the story.
Overall the character's biggest weakness is how vanilla he can be, but you need aspects of that to keep everything else grounded. The book succeeds in showing why people trust him, but it doesn't necessarily succeed in showing why they love being around him.
Rating: 3 out of 5
