Nothing beats a free game – especially if it's a great game in its own right, and a game that reminds you of classic releases like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Metroid: Samus Returns. Not to mention if it's a game in the Shin Megami Tensei series.

Atlus has announced that it has released a new game that ties in with the 3DS remake Shin Megami Tensei Synchronicity Prologue, which is coming next year. It's a recreation of a 2009 project called Strange Journey, which is a Metroidvania-style game featuring a pair of Atlus mascots, including Jack Frost and Pyro Jack.

In the game, you'll journey through a number of catacombs, using the duo's combined talents of fire and ice to get through obstacles and deal with enemies. Along the way, you'll need to solve a number of puzzles, all in the name of moving forward.

Having a game like this for free is very cool, though there are some mild limitations. First up, it's only in Japanese; secondly, it's only available for Windows systems; and last but not least, you can only download it through December 24th. Still, that's a good amount of time to get your hands on a free effort.

And the game is already inspiring a bunch of Shin Megami Tensei fans, who demand a sequel on different platforms. One Twitter user managed to write, "I would pay full price for a full-length follow-up to this game on Switch." And it's a novel idea, considering that the Metroidvania style set-up really works well for that system. (For that matter, how about a port of Metroid: Samus Returns for that console, Nintendo? Please? Call it a Christmas present.)

While Strange Journey may take a little time to comprehend, there's no question that it's a fun game – and for free, no doubt. Download it now, and check out the video above while you wait, just to see what you're getting in the mood for. If you're a Shin Megami Tensei fan, you won't want to miss it.

You can download the game here!

Synchronicity Prologue will release next year for Nintendo 3DS.
