The next Friday the 13th is quickly approaching during the spookiest month of the year, and that means that some horrifying games are about to be dusted off for a night of terror-fueled gaming.
You don't have to look far to find horror games – especially considering how many superb titles in the genre have been released this year – but there are certainly some games that are just scary good compared to others. It'd be a shame to lose out on the occasion because you spent time on the wrong game during one of the most superstitious and ominous days of the year, so we've pulled together some of the best games to keep you occupied and terrified on Friday the 13th.
Friday the 13th: The Game
The list certainly wouldn't be complete without Friday the 13th: The Game, and it honestly feels inappropriate to start it with anything other than the multiplayer game that was released earlier in the year.
As any horror fan would have noticed by now, the asymmetrical game is based off of the acclaimed Friday the 13th series and pits several Counselors against Jason Voorhees. Several variations of Jason can be played that take their appearance and relevant traits straight from the movies, and while the Counselors aren't always the exact characters from the franchise, they're pretty much carbon copies of their stereotypes.
Friday the 13th: The Game has faced its fair share of issues after launch with the game coming from a small team of developers, but it's got plenty of content on the way with plans to build up the community, and with a physical launch of the game happening on Friday the 13th, now's the perfect time to return to Camp Crystal Lake.prevnext
Dead by Daylight
Often compared to Friday the 13th: The Game due to their similar asymmetrical structure and playable horror icons, Dead by Daylight offers more of a fast-paced experience if that's what you're looking for.
The game revolves around four Survivors doing their best to avoid one Killer, all of them trapped in a sadistic alternate world by a force known as the Entity. Killers do their best to toss Survivors up on sacrificial hooks while utilizing weapons like chainsaws and beartraps and using special powers, and the Survivors must work together to repair generators and make their daring escape.
Dead by Daylight recently added Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to its lineup, a famous killer who's preceded in the game by Halloween's Michael Myers. There's also talks of Freddy Krueger possibly being added, so don't expect the horror fuel to end anytime soon.prevnext
The Evil Within 2
In a brand new release that couldn't come at a more appropriate time, The Evil Within 2 is scheduled to release across platforms on Friday the 13th.
Bethesda's survival game takes several pages from other games like the Resident Evil series while still putting a terrifying twist on the enemies and events. With the game taking place in a deadly environment called a STEM world, the enemies and settings are created based off memories and nightmares and are unrestrained by any kind of limitations.
The Evil Within included plenty of kills that are brutal and grotesque enough to make players squirm in their gaming chairs, and from the way that the sequel is being advertised, the same can be expected from The Evil Within 2 when it launches on Oct. 13.prevnext
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
Revisiting the classic Resident Evil games that have made their way to newer consoles through backwards compatibility options is always one route, but if you want a fresh take on the franchise, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is the perfect place to start. The game ditches the guns blazing style of more recent entries and returns to the tight quarters, jump scares, and agonizing boss fights that horror veterans will be familiar with.
To sweeten the deal, Biohazard is even on sale right now, both the base and the Deluxe versions. More free content is coming soon for the game in addition to DLC that's already available, and if you want most terrifying experience possible, you can drop a few hundred on a PlayStation VR headset to get some in-your-face terror.prevnext
