The Spellthief's Edge support item and its upgrades in League of Legends currently have buffs being tested on the PBE that increase the items' cooldown reduction stat for a small price increase.

Changes don't begin for the item until players upgrade it to Frostfang, however. The starting Spellthief's Edge item hasn't received any changes itself, but considering the upgrade costs barely more than a Sightstone, it won't be long before supports can take advantage of the buffs.

On the PBE, the Frostfang upgrade that costs 850 total gold still grants players the same stats in ability power, mana regeneration, and gold per second, but it also now gives 5 percent cooldown reduction. The addition may not seem like too much, but if supports take masteries or even runes to increase their cooldown at the start of the game, it's a quick way to reach 10 percent CDR or even higher. Frostfang is the only one of the three Spellthief's upgrades with changes that isn't receiving a price increase, so don't expect it to cost more should the changes go live.

Moving on from Frostfang, the two fully-upgraded Spellthief's items also receive quite a bit more CDR, doubled from their amount that's currently live in League. Both the Frost Queen's Claim and the Eye of the Watchers have their CDR stat raised to 20 percent each on the PBE with both of their prices being increased to 2300 gold as opposed to 2200. Adding an extra 10 percent CDR is certainly a bigger spike than the Frostfang item for a pretty cheap cost, so supports will likely be hitting their 40, often 45 percent CDR cap much quicker.

The buffs for the Spellthief's items come from part of a recent discussion concerning the dominance of the Ancient Coin items, an option that many mages were opting for because of the crazy amount of gold that the item passively provided. But while the buffs are definitely appreciated for mage supports who don't want to be forced into the Ancient Coin, the support items already offer a great deal of CDR that might go to waste if players are reaching their cap sooner.

With just one of Spellthief's final upgrades and two, maybe one extra CDR item, supports will quickly be capped. It might not be detrimental for champs like Zyra and Brand who can opt for higher damage while also getting the CDR, but for others who stack their builds with items like Redemption, Ardent Censer, and Mikael's Crucible, we could see more slightly diversified builds from mage supports if the changes go through.

The buffs are currently being tested on the PBE, so final numbers or other stats could certainly be tweaked before the changes to live.
