Solstice Event

Pokemon Go's Solstice Event begins tomorrow and will feature increased spawns of a ton of Fire and Ice-Type Pokemon. The announcement also noted that players would get additional XP bonuses for accomplishing certain actions within the game. For example, bonuses for catching a Pokemon on the first throw will be increased during the event. Although catching Pokemon, spinning Poke Stops, or battling in gyms won't earn you more than usual XP, most of the secondary catch bonuses will be boosted over the next week.

The initial announcement didn't say how big the XP increases would be, but a new post on Pokemon's main webpage seems to have given away the answer. The post uses an example of catching a Pokemon with a Curveball throw and notes that a player would get a 30 XP bonus instead of the usual 10 XP.

While it's possible that different bonuses have different increases, the implication is that Pokemon Go will give out 3X bonuses for the following actions:

  • Catching a Pokemon with a Nice, Great, or Excellent Throw
  • Catching a Pokemon with a Curveball
  • Catching a Pokemon on the first throw
  • Hatching a Pokemon from an Egg

These boosted bonuses stack with the Lucky Egg, so players can get up to six times the XP as usual. Coincidentally, Lucky Eggs are discounted during the entire Solstice Event.

The Solstice Event begins tomorrow at 1 PM Pacific Time. We'll cover any surprises that occur during the event.
