Pokemon Go
is celebrating its first birthday in a pretty unique way: with frustrating delays over a cool new feature.

Earlier today, the popular game announced it was celebrating its first anniversary with a new event that would send a new Pikachu variant into the wild. These "Ash Hat Pikachu" (which are Pikachu wearing Ash's hat from the Pokemon anime series) were due to arrive around 4 PM ET.

However, nearly two hours later, the Pikachu have yet to pop up in the wild. This is despite Pokemon Go releasing its new moderately discounted "Anniversary Box" for sale in their in-game store.

Frustration over the event was already pretty high, as many fans thought the event was lacking compared to previous ones held by the game. But the Pikachu delay has a lot of fans grumbling, including Pokemon master and Serebii siterunner Joe Merrick:

And while inexplicable and frustrating delays might seem like the perfect way for Pokemon Go to celebrate its first birthday, the game at least acknowledges that there's an issue and they're actively working to resolve it...which is a step up from this time last year.

Hopefully, we'll be able to celebrate Pokemon Go's birthday by catching a new Pikachu here soon. After all, time is running out on the game's first birthday...although the celebration will continue until late July.

UPDATE: THE PIKACHU ARE HERE.
