PS3 and Xbox 360 Game Was the #1 Best-Selling Game Last Month, Beating College Football 27 and Assassin’s Creed

A PS3 and Xbox 360 game was the #1 best-selling game of July 2026, at least in the United States. Right now, said game is also the 5th best-selling game of 2026. A 14-year-old game. The game in question is so old it was on the Nintendo Wii U. What makes this even more impressive is it beat out some heavy hitters in July, such as EA Sports College Football 27, Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced, Halo: Campaign Evolved, and Splatoon Raiders.

For the month of July, more specifically, the best-selling video game in the United States was none other than Treyarch and Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, which was re-released on PS5 this month alongside Call of Duty: Black Ops, which also charted for the month. This goes to show just how popular these games were back in the day, and they were. Not only did they sell boatloads, but they are considered alongside Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 as some of the best COD games of all time. Hence why there have been so many Black Ops games to date, and hence why the Black Ops sub-branding continues to this day. What makes this achievement all the more noteworthy is that the new re-release was limited to just PS5 and PS4. There was no new re-release on PC or Xbox.

PS3 and Xbox 360 Supremacy

Below Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 in the number two spot is the aforementioned EA Sports College Football 27. In the #3 spot is the aforementioned Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced. #3 is the EA Sports MVP Bundle, and then rounding out the top five is the first game, Call of Duty: Black Ops. 6-10, meanwhile, as follows: Halo: Campaign Evolved, Splatoon Raiders, Echoes of Aincraft: Sword Art Online, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, and 007 First Light.

This chart comes from Circana, which is important to note because it does have some projected sales mixed in with its raw data. So, at a bare minimum, it is an incomplete picture, but it’s also possibly there are some inaccuracies. The American market research and technology company is well-known and considered reliable, but it’s not infallible by any means.

As noted, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was massive back in the day, so it’s not shocking it has landed in the #1 spot, especially since it crashed the PlayStation Store at release, but it had a lot working against it. For one, the new re-release was PlayStation-only. Two, there was no marketing. Three, the games are old. There are many who are now core contributors to the gaming market who never played it. And three, there has been Call of Duty fatigue lately, but this apparently only extends to new Call of Duty and not nostalgic Call of Duty.
