The latest GTA 6 news has left Grand Theft Auto fans divided about the story of the upcoming release from Rockstar Games. Of course, GTA 6 is set to be the biggest release in entertainment history. To prepare for this, Rockstar Games has reportedly been given an unprecedented war chest to develop the game, which looks poised to be bigger and longer than Red Dead Redemption 2 and any other previous release from the studio. If you’re a fan of the series, you have every reason to be dying with anticipation. Yet, there is one thing some fans can’t help but worry about.

When GTA 6 releases this coming spring, assuming it isn’t delayed, which looks like a real possibility, it will be the first game not written by Dan Houser, one of the founders of Rockstar Games, and one of the creators and lead writers on the GTA series. Houser recently confirmed he has zero writing in GTA 6. This is obviously going to impact the story and writing of the game, as Houser has been the lead writer and creative on every previous game. Some Grand Theft Auto fans aren’t too worried about this, citing the fact that he wasn’t the only writer working on the series all these years, while others are worried about what will fill the vacuum of influence he leaves behind.
“That’s Not Good”
“I think the idea that Houser was the only reason Rockstar released the caliber of games they have is disrespectful to all the developers who worked their asses off to make these games as amazing as they are,” says one Grand Theft Auto fan about the news over on the GTA 6 Reddit page.
Another comment adds: “Keep in mind, guys, that Dan wasnโt the only writer. Rupert and Michael also wrote those games, and they have credits on Grand Theft Auto VI. I have no worries about the story.”
To be fair to those arguing this more optimistic view of the situation, what they are saying is true. Dan Houser has been instrumental in the direction of the series, but he hasn’t been the only one. Meanwhile, and perhaps just as important, are all the people who have been underneath him, making his vision a reality. And in this regard, Rockstar Games is brimming with senior talent that has been with the studio for many years. Compared to most other AAA studios, Rockstar Games has a much slower churn rate of talent, which benefits it greatly. That said, while these are positive spins on bad news, it doesn’t change the fact that this is still bad news, no matter how you look at it. The better question is to what extent?
“Thatโs not good,” writes one Grand Theft Auto fan. Another fan adds: “I know GTA is far from just one personโs work, and Iโm confident GTA VI and its story will be amazing. But not gonna pretend this doesnโt bother me a tiny bit. Even if they got โโbetter writersโโ he has obviously been a core part of the gameโs identity. Iโm not just looking for ‘good,’ Iโm looking for the Rockstar vibe.”
Of course, only time will tell how much worse off the story of GTA 6 will be with the lack of Dan Houser’s influence on it. It could even end up better, but it will no doubt be different. You can replace good writers and creatives with fellow good writers and creatives, but they will bring a new style and perspective with them. The good news is that the Rockstar Games’ writing room has others, like Houser, who have been there since the jump, so hopefully the difference Dan’s absence creates isn’t perceptible in the final product.
All of that said, and as always, feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think, or join the conversation over on the ComicBook Forum. Are you worried about the story of GTA 6?
