It doesn’t seem like it was that long ago when Sony Pictures was rebooting their Spider-Man films with rising star Andrew Garfield and up-and-coming director Marc Webb, attempting to recapture the magic that Tobey Maguire and Sam Raimi found in their own trilogy.
Fast forward to five years later and the unimaginable is finally happening: Spider-Man is getting his own movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The whole process has occurred with a quickened pace, as evidenced by actor Tom Holland’s Tweet commemorating his casting.
Two years ago today I was cast as Spider-man and my life was flipped upside down. What a ride it's been and what amazing fans I have ❤— Tom Holland (@TomHolland1996) June 23, 2017
It’s crazy that just two years ago, Holland wasn’t virtually unheard of. Now he’s on the verge of becoming a household name with Spider-Man: Homecoming set to debut in theater. The first Marvel Studios movie from director Jon Watts will also see Michael Keaton return to the superhero genre, with his last movie coming in 1992’s Batman Returns.
The young Holland will portray the Webslinger in a period of his life barely touched in the other films and is said to be a true coming-of-age movie set in high school. Though it remains to be seen if the sequels will stick to that same era, it’s refreshing to see the young version of Peter Parker showcased in the early comic books by Steve Ditko as well as the seminal run of Ultimate Spider-Man by Mark Bagley and Brian Bendis.
Holland’s life has likely been radically transformed since being cast as Spider-Man, as the actor has since appeared on every talk show on late night since he first appeared in Captain America: Civil War. With planned appearances in two more Avengers movies, as well as Marvel Studios own plans for a trilogy, the actor has job security for many years to come.
Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 7.
