'Old Man Logan' Prequel Gets Cover From Original Artist Steve McNiven

Marvel is returning to the world of "Old Man Logan," and original artist Steve McNiven putting his mark on the new series.

That series is Old Man Hawkeye, a miniseries from writer Ethan Sacks and artist Marco Checchetto that will reveal what former Avenger Hawkeye was up to in that wretched, villain-ruled world before he and Logan made that fateful road trip in the original "Old Man Logan" series

Old Man Hawkeye is a prequel set 45 years into the future of the Marvel Universe, but five years before the events of the original "Old Man Logan." The story finds Hawkeye eager to avenge his fallen fellow heroes, who died during the supervillain uprising.

Writer Ethan sacks previously wrote a short story for Marvel's Secret Empire event but he is primarily known as a journalist covering comics for the New York Daily News.

"Ethan's been a journalist for years, and he's a certified nerd," Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada said in a statement. "I've known him well over a decade, and I never knew he could write non-fiction until one day, he told me, 'I wrote this Star Wars one-shot.' When I find anyone who's talented, I always hand them to our editors and say, 'do not be affected by the fact this is coming from me.' And everyone loved the Star Wars story and what he had done."

Sacks explained the premise of Old Man Hawkeye when the series was announced on Sunday.

"In this story, he's losing his vision and that sort of forces him to confront something really horrible that happened to him personally 45 years ago, and go on his own hero's journey while he still can," he said. "It's very much like a ticking clock that's forcing him into action."

Fans were surprised by the Old Man Hawkeye announcement, and they were shy about sharing their feelings on social media.

Sacks will be at New York Comic Con to talk about Old Man Hawkeye on Marvel's "Marvel Legacy: X-Men" panel on Friday, October 6th at 6:30 p.m. The 12-issue series will begin publication in January 2018.
