Captain America's Beard Was Most Talked About Part Of 'Avengers: Infinity War' Trailer

A studio can never quite predict how fans will react when a trailer for a highly-anticipated film debuts, whether it will be mocked and ridiculed or celebrated and championed. The debut of the Avengers: Infinity War trailer yesterday was met mostly with praise, with one of the more surprising reactions being how much fans were surprised, confused and excited by Captain America with a beard.

Social media researching company Fizziology determined that, within seven hours of the trailer's debut, mentions of Captain America's beard on Twitter exceeded 20,000. The context of these messages wasn't tabulated, so it's unclear what thoughts were on the facial hair growth.

The breakdown of the terms with the most five mentions are as follows:

• Captain America's Beard (20,474 mentions)
• Spidey sense (6,100 mentions)
• Guardians at the end of the trailer (5,497 mentions)
• Get this man a shield (2,180 mentions)
• Group together running at end (2,108 mentions)

Earlier this afternoon, Marvel Studios took to Twitter to confirm that, within 24 hours, the trailer had been viewed more than 230 million times, making it the most-watched trailer debut in that time period. All those views led to social media making it more talked about than many other films that have dominated social media.

The breakdown of films with most mentions within seven hours of its premiere is as follows:

• Avengers: Infinity War (1,147,438)
• Star Wars: The Last Jedi (784,360)
• Fifty Shades of Grey (503,392)
• Captain America: Civil War (426,015)
• Black Panther (353,410)

These numbers can be attributed to a variety of factors, such as the day of the week they premiered, the time of day they appeared and which outlet premiered the trailer.

For example, Star Wars: The Last Jedi's trailer debuted late on a Monday night, making it a prime topic of conversation for American audiences, while many European users would have been sleeping.

From looking at the most talked about moments from the trailer above, it's also surprising that, when competing with Captain America, Winter Soldier, Black Panther and Hulk running into battle together, these sequences weren't nearly as noteworthy as the fact that Steve Rogers has given up shaving since we last saw him.

Fans can see more of Captain America's beard when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on May 4, 2018.
