A lot of people got worried when Tim Miller announced he wasn’t going to take part in the production of Deadpool 2, ComicBook.com's 4th Most Anticipated Film as voted by readers. After Miller directed the first film and did so well with the budgetary constraints—not to mention pushing so hard to get the film made—it was a huge surprise.
The development left people wondering whether or not the Deadpool sequel might incur the same woes, or a long road to production, that the first film saw.
Leitch is coming off the production of the Charlize Theron-starring Atomic Blonde—based on the Oni Press comic called the Coldest City—which opens this summer and appears to be just as hard of a kick in the face that the first John Wick film was. So he’ll be ready to go when the cameras are set to start rolling.
The writers of the Deadpool movie spoke a little bit about the change in sensibilities between the two directors. Rhett Resse and Paul Wernick recently spoke with Coming Soon about the shift and what Leitch brings to the table.
While discussing the teaser to the opening of Logan, the writing team was asked how Leitch differs from Miller in terms of style.
Every director brings their take to the material,” Wernick said. Dave is a wonderful director with great ideas. He’s really an action savant. He really makes every other action director look like they’re from another era, from an era long ago. We’re really embracing that and writing to it.”
His writing partner Reese added on to that point, saying how the short could be unique from the regular Deadpool style because of both the character’s versatility and the fact that it would take place before a Wolverine movie.
“We also wanted that open to feel like the start of Logan,” Reese said, “so if you were going to see Logan and the first shot came up you would think it’s gonna be Hugh in the hoodie, and then when it turns out to be Deadpool you realize what’s going on. That was the goal and I think he pulled it off wonderfully.”
Well, it looks like Leitch pulled it off and the film is in good hands.

The Deadpool sequel, which is being directed by David Leitch (John Wick, Atomic Blonde) and written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, is currently in pre-production and is expected to begin filming at the end of this spring. The film will introduce Deadpool's time-traveling mutant partner, Cable, as well as X-Force member Domino, who is being portrayed by Atlanta actress Zazie Beetz. Supporting characters from the original film — such as Colossus (voiced by Stefan Kapicic), Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and taxi driver Dopinder (Karan Soni) — are also expected to return.
Deadpool 2 will arrive in theater in 2018.
