While Doctor Strange is the next Marvel Studios property to see release, the much-anticipated Guardian's of the Galaxy Vol. 2 won't be too far behind it.

Fans are anxious to see what the team of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Racoon, Baby Groot, and new member Mantis have been up to since the original film, but that hasn't stopped some from inquiring about a possible third entry in the series.

The question was posed to Guardian's Director James Gunn on Twitter, and while he seemed pretty confident that another sequel will eventually happen, he didn't seem so sure that he would be at the helm for it.

"GotG 3 will probably happen, but there's no real plans for it yet, and I haven't decided what I'm doing after 2."

Gunn's trademark humor and banter are two big reasons why the first film appealed to so many, and it would be a shame to see these characters under someone else's direction. Still, every franchise has to move forward, and Gunn just might want to take a break from all the space opera superhero stuff and try something different.

Even if he decides to leave the franchise after Vol. 2, he isn't planning on doing so quietly. Guardian's of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has added Kurt Russell to the cast as Ego, The Living Planet, and Sylvester Stallone as a yet unnamed character. It will also see the return of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, and Glenn Close.

Guardian's of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theatres on May 5th, 2017.

Set to the backdrop of 'Awesome Mixtape #2,' Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team's adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill's true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes' aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
