It’s always amusing to see filmmakers being so secretive about plot points ahead of a movie’s release. It’s especially hilarious when it's a big budget film from a major studio.
Even funnier? When it’s one of the most anticipated movies of the year.
Because when it comes to press set visits, Super Bowl commercials Happy Meal tie-ins, and toy lines being released to promote the film, it’s almost impossible to stop the Hollywood hype machine from spoiling key aspects of a movie.
It’s admirable to see Gunn so protective about the plot of the film. It’s even kind of cute thinking he could stop certain details from being released.
But it’s damn near impossible to stop something like a product description of action figures from spoiling key character details and traits.
So when ComicBookMovie stumbles across the official description of a two-pack of Star-Lord and Ego, The Living Planet action figures—provided by Marvel itself—with a potential spoiler, he can’t get too upset, right?
The description of mention states: “Roguish and unpredictable, Ego and Star-Lord share many of the same qualities as father and son. But when it comes to defending the galaxy as each sees fit, their approaches unquestionably differ.”
It’s not an uncommon trope, one reflected as recently in the conflict between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker.
Could we see Kurt Russell’s Ego go against Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill over the fate of the galaxy? While it might not be the sole conflict in the film, it’s seeming evermore likely. Ego has often been portrayed as a villain in the comics, and that question hasn’t even been raised that much since Kurt Russell’s casting was announced.
So while this may seem like a surprise to some, it’s only framed as such due to Gunn’s secrecy surrounding Russell’s character and relationship tot he leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Which, really, is kind of silly in the grand scheme of things.
