The before their first big movie, the Guardians Of The Galaxy were not the household name they are now. They were hardly even a popular Marvel comic.
This unfamiliarity from the masses allowed director James Gunn and co-writer Nicole Perlman to take many liberties with the characters and not earn the scorn of the comic loyalists. But there was one change they made to one of the original Guardians members that didn't sit well with fans.
"Yondu became a space pirate, and not a sort of Native American-inspired spiritual warrior that he is in the comics, but people very rarely get upset about any of that," Gunn said. "It seemed like the one thing that people got upset about was Yondu's small fin. They somehow thought it was important that Yondu had a big fin."
Never let it be said that comic book fans are open to change. But Gunn acquiesced and made a change to placate them.
"I don't understand what comics fans get upset about over something else they don't get upset about," Gunn said. "That something so physical and small would be the thing they'd get upset about, but they did -- and in a nod to the fans, who I'm appreciative towards, we gave them the big fin."
Unfortunately, Yondu had that fin for half of the movie before biting the bullet. At least the fin live on with Kraglin in Avengers: Infinity War.
