James Gunn Says Rocket's Creator Hidden in 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2'

Easter eggs are a big deal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Now, director James Gunn has revealed that there's a major one involving Rocket tucked away in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Responding to a fan's question about who created the fan-beloved genetically engineered raccoon, Gunn replied that if fans looked carefully they'd find that Rocket's creator was carefully hidden somewhere in Vol. 2.

"Believe it or not if you're really really really smart this is hidden somewhere in Vol 2," Gunn wrote.

While it's pretty vague as clues go, it has sent fans off on a detail-oriented re-watch of the film trying to figure out exactly who the mysterious creator is and where they appear in the film. Fans have speculated that Rocket's creator is anyone from David Hasselhoff to Thanos himself, with the Thanos theory bolstered by Nebula's (Karen Gillam) explanation to Gamora (Zoe Saldana) how the villain would tear her apart and rebuild her cybernetically after each failed fight between the two sisters. However, some fans took a more practical approach, reminding everyone that Rocket Raccoon's creators in the comics, Bill Mantlo and Keith Giffen, are listed in the credits.

The Rocket mystery is just the latest example of Gunn interacting with fans when it comes to Easter eggs hidden in the Guardians films. Earlier this year, Gunn pointed fans in the right direction when it came to finding the notoriously impossible Easter egg he hid in the first film. While that Easter egg has partially been found, Gunn said it doesn't count as solved until the entire egg is revealed. He also pointed out at that time that an equally challenging Easter egg was hidden in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Hopefully fans will be able to figure out Rocket's creator's appearance before the Guardians themselves show up in the next MCU installment, Avengers: Infinity War. The first trailer for the film dropped this week, getting fans excited for the full film, set to open in theaters May 4, 2018.
