With the passing of Joan Lee, support for the former Marvel executive Stan Lee and his family have poured in from all over the internet, including a beautiful tribute from writer and filmmaker Kevin Smith.

Smith took to his Instagram account earlier to share a touching tribute about Joan. Detailing his time interviewing her for a look-back at Stan’s career at Marvel, Smith detailed the time he had spent with Joan.

“I’ll never forget the moment she said ‘It’s always Spider-Man, Spider-Man, Spider-Man. They don’t know the amazing writer he really is,’” reflected Smith. “She then talked about the words her longtime love had written for her over a lifetime spent together.”

The filmmaker then went on to share the famous story in which Stan had wanted to quit Marvel, but it was Joan that convinced him to stay and write a comic he was proud of. That comic turned out to be the Fantastic Four, a series that can be credited with creating the Marvel Universe.

“He told us tales of heroes but Joan was Stan’s personal superhero – and without her, we never get our modern mythology,” Smith said. “They say behind every great man is a great woman. In this case, the great woman was always standing right beside him. Joan and Stan were best friends for 70 years.”

Smith then finished by offering support to the closest friends and family to Joan.

Our thoughts are with Stan Lee and his family at this time.
