Karen Gillan Wants A Nebula Spinoff MCU Movie

If ever character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe were to get a solo film, the franchise would never end. Marvel Studios has introduced dozens of heroes since Iron Man debuted back in 2008, and the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise ushered in plenty just on its own. Lesser-known characters like Drax and Groot were brought to the attention’s eye, and stars like Karen Gillan brought notoriety to Nebula. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 set to release in a couple of weeks, a slew of familiar faces are about to make a comeback to theaters. And, according to one star, they would really love to see their character get their very own spinoff.

In an interview with Hey U Guys, Gillan sat down to talk about Nebula’s role in the next Guardians film. It was there the actress was asked about a Nebula’s standalone, and Gillan admitted filming such a project would be a dream.

“I mean, that would be amazing, that would be the dream. We’ve never spoken about it though โ€“ maybe I’ll casually bring it up tonight at the premiere.”

For now, it does seem unlikely that there are any immediate plans to explore a Nebula spinoff. The character was originally intended to die in the first Guardians film, but James Gunn championed for the character to undergo a more extensive character arc. When Nebula appears in the second Guardians film, the character will become an unwitting hero when she teams up with the ragtag team of space superheroes. Nebula is also set to appear in Avengers: Infinity War, so the blockbuster may give Thanos’ estranged daughter more room to expand her storyline.

In the future, the MCU does have plan to focus more so on its cosmic franchises, and Nebula would certainly fit within that realm. Kevin Feige recently stressed that Gunn has become an integral part of the MCU’s storytelling process, and the director will help usher in a new era of Marvel films following Avengers 4. If Nebula can keep up, then the character may just be granted her own film or at least a spinoff focusing on her and Gamora.

Take that, Groot and Rocket. You two may have to wait your turn.
