Marvel and Freeform have cast Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph as the lead characters in the upcoming Cloak and Dagger television series. The show, which has already been ordered to series, is a coming-of-age drama set in the Marvel Universe about two teens who gain superpowers.
Created by Bill Mantlo and Ed Hannigan for Marvel Comics, Cloak (Joseph), real name Tyrone Johnson, and Dagger (Holt), really name Tandy Bowen, are two teenagers from different worlds who are given superpowers against their will. The two fall in love after running away from home.
"The characters of Tandy and Tyrone have always stood out to me ever since I first met them in the pages of Marvel comics when I was a boy. When Olivia and Aubrey read for the roles, these characters leapt off the page. We're so excited to see what these talented young actors bring to the Marvel Universe," said executive producer/showrunner Joe Pokaski.
"Marvel is delighted to have found our Cloak & Dagger. Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph encompass the true essence of the characters and we are excited for the audience to see them in these roles," said Jeph Loeb, Head of Marvel Television and Executive Producer.
Dagger's character description reads, "Once a privileged little girl, Tandy Bowen watched as her family was destroyed by a disastrous storm that uprooted her life. Now in her late teens, an unexpected encounter with a boy named Tyrone sparks a life changing event."
Cloak is described, "Young Tyrone Johnson wanted nothing more than to prove he was fearless. But when everything he held close was taken away, life taught Tyrone to be afraid. Now older and more sheltered, Tyrone closes himself off. But when he meets a girl named Tandy his life changes Forever."
Cloak and Dagger was in the works at ABC Family before the network was rebranded as Freeform. After being in development for five years, the project was picked up to series last year. Cloak and Dagger is a co-production of Marvel Studios and ABC Signature Studios.
Cloak and Dagger will join Marvel's Agents of SHIELD and the upcoming Marvel's The Inhumans in representing the Marvel Cinematic Universe on broadcast television. The characters of Cloak and Dagger made several guest appearances in the Runaways comic book, which is set to be adapted to television on Hulu. There's been no comment from Marvel on the possibility of Cloak and Dagger the TV show interacting with the Runaways TV show.
