Mutant Cameos Were Cut From Logan
Whenever a new X-Men film releases in theaters, fans are always on the lookout for some cameos from some of the lesser known mutants from the comics.
As they should be. There are so many memorable characters throughout the franchise's long history that even if a mutant pops up for a minor appearance it's considered a big deal.
Plus, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have been teasing at a proper Deadpool and Wolverine team up for so long since X-Men Origins, maybe the latest and last film in Wolvy's franchise would finally provide it.
But when speaking with We Got It Covered, Logan director James Mangold revealed that superfluous mutant appearances were hard to fit in to the near-mutantless world of his film. However, that's not to say he didn't have ideas to do it.
"There were times early on in the story where I played with the idea of Hugh coming along, and I don't want to give away anything, but I played with there being an underground railroad where there were a couple of other mutants that he met on the journey," Mangold said. "It always seemed to detract from the loneliness of the story though and became a kind of cameo."
While the tone might work for a film based at the Xavier school, where many mutants populate the hallways and classrooms, it just didn't work for the tone established in Logan.
"Still, there was always a curiosity. I'm so cautious of it though, despite how much fans want it to happen," Mangold added. "You find these moments where you're trying to please people and write these scenes where they'll bump into somebody but it always just seems like an awkward cameo unless you can make it fit organically and the character is integral to the story."
From the moment this film was announced, Mangold and Jackman seemed adamant to serving the story and giving the character the sendoff he deserved. It's encouraging to see that the filmmakers did not compromise on their vision, especially considering how the parent studios can often interfere with those kinds of decisions.
But Mangold's Logan is the experience it is because of its insular approach to the character, isolated from the rest of the franchise for good reason.
Let's just hope Reynolds stopped by the set and they filmed a scene for Deadpool 2, instead.
