A new poster for Marvel’s Doctor Strange was released Thursday afternoon by Marvel UK & Ireland, where the film will debut more than a week (on October 25) before it opens in the U.S. (on November 4). The poster shows star Benedict Cumberbatch in his full Doctor Strange regalia, not expected until the last act of the film, complete with the Eye of Agamotto and the Cloak of Levitation, two iconic items that are quite famous to comic book fans.

Surrounding Strange is the folding world, with the stars as a backdrop; this is pulled right out of the trailers, where we saw the world folding in on itself as part of their use of magic. Inside the Eye is a glowing green stone, as seen in the second trailer – could that be the next Infinity Stone? It’s likely, as there are still two more to be found before we launch into the Infinity War.

The only other notable element to the poster is the new logo for Marvel Studios (and the very inclusion of the word “Studios” as previous films just said Marvel above them) and the tagline of “The Impossibilities are Endless.”

Doctor Strange once again reaches into the Marvel catalog for a character that is considerably less well-known than, say, Spider-Man. The Master of the Mystic Arts, Doctor Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme – or at least becomes that – deigned to protect the world from magical and mystical threats from this dimension and countless others. That basic synopsis will carry over into the film version, where Cumberbatch plays Doctor Stephen Strange, who after an accident that ruins his perfect surgeon’s hands, travels the world seeking a way to heal, and finds that his wounds run much deeper.

It may seem odd for Marvel to branch into a completely new and different aspect of the Marvel Universe with this film, especially so close to the 2018 release of Avengers: Infinity War, the absolute apex of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe films so far. However, even casual fans should remember what Marvel pulled off with Guardians of the Galaxy, opening up the cosmic corner of their universe, and of course bear in mind that even Iron Man was far from a household name prior to 2008.

Doctor Strange hits U.S. theaters November 4, 2016. Directed by Scott Derrickson, it also stars Benedict Wong, Mads Mikkelsen, and Tilda Swinton. Check out the new poster, along with two previous posters, in the gallery below.
