Marvel Studios brought down the house at New York Comic-Con 2016 when they assembled the four-person team for the Netflix The Defenders miniseries event on stage for the first time. However, that uproar was upended by the massive twist ending of having Alien franchise and all-around sci-fi culture queen Sigourney Weaver appear onstage with The Defenders as the villain they will have to battle against in the show!
Since that shocker, Marvel fans have been waiting and speculating about which possible character from Marvel Comics lore Weaver could be playing, and how she'll fit into the miniseries' eclectic collection of superheroes and villains.
EW has the exclusive first-look photo of Weaver in Marvel's The Defenders - check it out in hi-res in our gallery above. Meanwhile, showrunner Marco Ramirez dropped the following information about her character, whose name we now know is "Alexandra":
"Sigourney is the kind of person you can buy as the smartest person in the room, who you can also buy as a person holding a flamethrower. Her character is a very powerful force in New York City. She’s everything Sigourney is: sophisticated, intellectual, dangerous.”
The Defenders will pull together storylines from the four Marvel Netflix series that proceeded it (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist), which means that real-world things like gangs, cops, courtroom drama, board room drama and the New York business elite, and fantastical things like mystic ninja clans, alien tech, and superhuman beings are all fair game for The Defenders storyline. Ramirez is right when he says that it takes someone of Weaver's caliber to wrestle all that together like an "utter badass."
