Spider-Man's homecoming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe was loaded with references and callbacks to previous films and iconic moments. It was very much a movie meant to welcome the Wallcrawler into the greater world of superheroes.
After debuting in Captain America: Civil War, Marvel Studios' and Sony Pictures' Spider-Man: Homecoming pushed the character to the forefront, capped off with Tony Stark inviting the young hero to become the latest member of the Avengers.
The scene takes place in the swanky new Avengers compound in upstate New York, established after Avengers: Age Of Ultron. And while it was pretty awesome to see Parker smiling in front of the Avengers logo on the wall of the facility, it was intimidating for director Jon Watts to film such a scene.
"That big moment in the movie was always there," Watts said to Cinema Blend. "But there was a question of how much will be designed, and how much will we be able to shoot, and how much will we be able to show. If anything, that was like, 'Really? You're going to show this? You're sure? OK, fine. Thank you! Yes, I will take that!' ... That was really fun to shoot. And just such a nice moment to see this kid, with this really goofy t-shirt on, smiling and staring out at Avengers compound with that big A behind him. It feels like, 'Wow, Spider-Man is really in the Marvel universe!'"
That scene really caps off an adventure in which Spider-Man is having to deal with the aftermath of the Avengers battles and Stark's not taking him seriously. Spidey is left to his own devices to solve a problem that's bigger than he is, and he saves the day.
It was a great way to introduce him to the MCU and make him an intrinsic part of the franchise's future.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is in theaters now.
