Does Cable Casting Mean Marvel Will Recast Thanos?

With one question being answered, another questions arises. Josh Brolin‘s casting as Cable in the sequel to Deadpool and beyond prompts the mystery of, “Will Marvel Studios recast their Thanos for Avengers: Infinity War?”

Brolin first appeared as the Mad Titan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, where he played the father of Nebula and Gamora who had been manipulating Ronan the Accuser’s villainous actions. The actor is set to take on the Avengers in what will serve as a culmination to 10-years worth of films with a two-part finale currently in production for theatrical releases in May of 2018 and May of 2019.

With Deadpool 2 set to begin production in June in Vancouver, in the midst of the Infinity War movies shooting predominantly in Atlanta, it seems as though recasting the purple menace is a possibility. After all, no actor has appeared in a pair of Marvel universes at the same time. Previously, Chris Evans played the Human Torch before going on to become Captain America and Michael B. Jordan took on the same Fantastic Four role before hopping into Black Panther. However, neither of the actors had an overlap in production schedules or release dates.

A conflict of interests could lead Marvel down a path of considering someone else for the role of Thanos. To most casual moviegoers, knowledge of Brolin’s role as the Mad Titan is mostly non-existent. Another actor has already played the part ahead of Brolin, making his debut in the dialogue-empty post-credits scene of 2012’s The Avengers, simply showing his massive grin to the camera.

When Terrence Howard posed problems for Marvel Studios, the production team recast the actor now famous for his role on Empire in a heartbeat — and his role was significantly better known to audiences than Brolin’s Thanos is at the moment. Howard played Tony Stark’s go-to military guy Colonel James Rhodes in 2008’s Iron Man before being replaced by Don Cheadle in Iron Man 2 and each appearance of the character beyond that.

At the moment, there is no reason to believe Brolin’s role in Deadpool 2 will effect his efforts in the Marvel Studios productions.
