Hollywood has hired many stars to play guys like James Bond and Batman, and Wolverine may join the club.
The X-Men member is one of the franchise's most popular thanks to Hugh Jackman, but the actor retired the role earlier this year. So, it's not surprising to hear that Fox isn't shooting down any reboot possibilities.
During a recent interview with Variety, 20th Century Fox's CEO Stacey Snider spoke about the possibility of Wolverine's return. Specifically, Snider was asked if the studio would recast the mutant since Jackman has left it behind, and she had this to say: "Anything's possible."
The vague answer doesn't make it seem like Fox is in any rush, but the studio won't turn its back on its most lucrative superhero. Jackman brought Wolverine to the big screen nine times, and movie lovers grew accustomed to seeing the hero. Logan's disappearance from theaters will sting Fox's box office pull, so it's easy to see why the studio will want to resurrect the hero at some point.
Jackman has been asked about his thoughts on a reboot, and the actor is open to it. In fact, the Aussie star thinks it is inevitable that Wolverine will return. Jackman spoke with The Independent about Wolverine's future, and he said, "He'll come back, just not with me."
"Definitely someone else will play the role, it's a great role," Jackman continued. "You know, it's like a Bond or it's like a Batman, those kinds of roles. Other people will play him for sure."
Jackman is all right with passing on Wolverine's torch, but Fox will have to convince fans that another actor can fill the star's shoes. The Aussie's iteration of Wolverine has been praised widely by audiences, and many consider it to be a definitive performance. Fox will have to take a different approach to Wolverine when (not if) the hero returns, and the studio better be ready to stand by the renovated hero. Jackman won't be there to back the bub up this next time.
