Comicbook.com’s Brandon Davis gets straight to the big question on fans’ minds, stating that: “Spider-Man: Homecoming is a brilliantly fun film which re-imagines the popular Marvel character with little, if any, room for criticism. 5 out of 5 stars.”
Both Sides of the Equation
Screen Rant loves how Spider-Man: Homecoming balances things, stating: “Spider-Man: Homecoming works as both a (very) funny high school comedy/drama and strong standalone superhero movie set in the MCU.”
Spider-Boy Rising
Variety‘s Owen Gleiberman states that, “The appeal of this particular Spider-Boy is all too basic: In his lunge for valor, he keeps falling, and he keeps getting up.”

Mashable praises the craftsmanship of Homecoming’s director Jon Watts, saying, “Watts nails the timeless cornerstones of adolescence: the crippling anxiety mixed with brash confidence, the life-or-death dimensions of a crush, the impatience to grow up.”

The Wrap writes that Spider-Man: Homecoming is “packaged like a fast-food menu of the things you love from Marvel movies: suit gags, winking humor, colorful showdowns, an identity crisis, two post-credit scenes (one being the last word on such teasers), and MCU cameos. The Captain America appearances are inspired, but Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark and Jon Favreau’s Happy are in this one enough as full-on characters that you could also call it ‘Iron Man 4.’”
The Ballad of Peter Parker
USA Today claims that Spider-Man: Homecoming isn’t just the best Spider-Man movie yet; it’s the best Peter Parker story, yet:
“Spider-Man: Homecoming breaks away from the past movies starring Marvel Comics’ signature web slinger in one particularly key aspect: All the best stuff happens when he’s not in his mask…Director Jon Watts’ film undoubtedly succeeds by making it about a boy rather than his wall-crawling alter ego.”
The Bad Word
Not everyone loved Spider-Man: Homecoming!
The Hollywood Reporter walked away unimpressed, stating that Homecoming is an “…occasionally exciting but often frustrating film, which seems to think the iconic character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko will appeal more to tech-addicted teens if only his costume has as many gizmos baked into it as Iron Man’s… it represents a creative misstep for the studio — albeit one likely to ride fanboy enthusiasm to much better receipts than those enjoyed by Amazing Spider-Man, the recent incarnation starring Andrew Garfield.”
