Sharks and movies go together like sand and beaches, or surfers and waves, or some other bad beach juxtapositions. And ever since Steven Spielberg terrified audiences and instilled a permanent fear of sharks with his first film, many other attempts have been made to recapture that magic.

Now Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures’ latest release looks to be a harrowing addition to the thriller genre with the new film 47 Meters Down set to debut in theaters June 16.

The movie stars Mandy Moore (Tangled, This Is Us) and Claire Holt (The Vampire Diaries, The Originals) as sisters who go on a dream vacation that dives into horrifying waters.

Directed by Johannes Roberts, the film also stars Matthew Modine as the guide who takes the sisters out to shark-infested waters, puts them in an observation cage, and lets them get up close and personal with the cold-blooded human killers.

And, of course, things go horribly wrong and the girls get plungedโ€”are you ready for it?โ€”47 Meters Down.

Jaws comparisons are inevitable, but the film seems to take a different approach by putting the protagonists in direct contact with the animals instead of treating one particular shark as if it were the killer in a slasher movie. It’s an interesting take on the genre and looks to be entertaining.

On the rebound after a devastating break-up, Lisa (Mandy Moore) is ready for adventure while on vacation in Mexico. Even still, she needs a little extra persuasion when her daring sister Kate (Claire Holt) suggests they go shark diving with some locals. Once underwater in a protective cage, Lisa and Kate catch a once in a lifetime, face-to-face look at majestic Great Whites. But when their worst fears are realized and the cage breaks away from their boat, they find themselves plummeting to the bottom of the seabed, too deep to radio for help without making themselves vulnerable to the savage sharks, their oxygen supplies rapidly dwindling. 47 METERS DOWN is a terrifying tale of survival set in the domain of the ocean’s fiercest creatures.
