A Brand New Liam Neeson Sequel Just Suddenly Appeared on Netflix (And Is Already the Streamer’s Biggest Movie)

When Netflix acquired the rights to Liam Neeson actioner The Ice Road back in 2021, nobody imagined streaming service would help turn the film into a franchise-starter. But the popularity of The Ice Road has endured, both domestically and internationally, leading to a very under-the-radar sequel that most fans probably didn’t even know was happening. Well that sequel is suddenly here, and it has immediately become the biggest movie on Netflix.

Ice Road: Vengeance arrived this year and just made its way to Netflix, seemingly unannounced and out of nowhere. But the lack of buzz about the film’s arrival didn’t seem to hurt its performance in the slightest. Immediately, Ice Road: Vengeance has already taken over the number one spot on the Netflix Top 10 Movies list.

Tuesday’s edition of the Netflix Top 10 Movies list features Ice Road: Vengeance in the first position, having passed the brand new rom-com The Wrong Paris, which has been holding steady in that top spot since its premiere on Friday. It appears the memories from the first Ice Road held strong with fans and they immediately flocked to the sequel as soon as they realized it was available.

What Is Ice Road: Vengeance About?

The first Ice Road movie told the story of Neeson’s character, Mike McCann, as he leads a group of ice road truckers across a frozen lake to help save workers trapped in a mine. The film is loosely based on The Wages of Fear, which is about truckers transporting explosive nitroglycerin across dangerous dirt roads.

Ice Road: Vengeance picks up the story of Mike after the events of the first film, rather than sticking with the same locale or premise. In this sequel, which arrives four years after its predecessor, Mike is taking a journey to Mount Everest to scatter the ashes of his late brother. While on a tour through Nepal, his bus is hijacked by mercenaries, sending Mike into action as he tries to save himself and the other innocent tourists. You can check out Netflix’s synopsis for the film below.

“Ice-road trucker Mike travels to scatter his brother’s ashes on Mount Everest, but when mercenaries hijack his tour, he must lead the fight to survive.”

At this point, it’s hard to tell if there will be a third Ice Road movie in Liam Neeson’s future. Director Jonathan Hensleigh was keen on reuniting with the star for a second time, so a strong performance on Netflix (and Prime Video in the UK) could lead the franchise to a third installment.
