HBO Max has been the cornerstone of Warner Bros. Discovery’s movie and TV selection for years now, but its about to get even better for DC fans. In addition to streaming classic movies like the original Superman films and Tim Burton’s Batman, HBO Max is the only place that the new DCU will live on streaming. With the first title in the franchise, DC’s Creature Commandos, already streaming now, and new episodes of Peacemaker premiering every week, DC fans are living in an all-new era. This week however will see the release of not one, but two major DC titles on HBO Max. Not only are these sure to satisfy both Batman and Superman fans, but one of them is an all-new project.

Superman, the first feature film in the new DCU and 2025’s highest grossing superhero movie, officially has a streaming premiere date, and it’s this Friday, September 19th. The film’s star David Corenswet was the first to make the announcement on his Instagram today, with the news confirmed by director James Gunn as well. HBO Max has also announced that when Superman premieres this Friday, the streamer will include an exclusive new version of the movie, one with American Sign Language (ASL) as interpreted by Deaf ASL Interpreter Giovanni Maucere and directed by Leila Hanaumi (Barbie with ASL, The Last of Us with ASL).
As noted though, 2025’s Superman isn’t the only new DC title making its way to HBO Max this weekend. In addition to James Gunn’s hit new movie, Warner Bros. is also set to release Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires on its streaming service as well on Friday, September 19th in Mexico (it’s available through digital VOD via Prime). Though the new animated film is an elseworlds story that isn’t canon to the DCU, as comic book fans know, the multiverse is vast and everything counts. This marks the first time that a new project featuring Superman and Batman have ever premiered on the service at the same time.
Superman’s HBO Max Premiere Date Is Good News

When Superman begins streaming on Friday, September 19th on HBO Max, it will be ten weeks after its initial theatrical release. Though this window is microscopic compared to streaming premieres in previous years, there’s still a bit of a delay here that is due entirely to the success of Superman on the big screen.
As of this writing, Superman has brought in over $615 million at the global box office, $353 million of it in the domestic market alone. With ten weeks separating the theatrical premiere and the streaming, it’s a sign that the studio is not only thrilled with how audiences responded to the movie in theaters but that they were willing to let the movie continue to build on that momentum and earn even more goodwill with audiences. Now, with some distance between its theatrical run being at its peak, and the great word of mouth the movie has built up over the summer, HBO Max will no doubt have a ratings winner.
Superman’s HBO Max Premiere Will Feed Right Into Peacemaker

Superman making its HBO Max Premiere this Friday though does pose an interesting reveal about the larger DCU. New episodes of Peacemaker Season 2 continue to premiere on the platform every Thursday, with this week’s episode the final one that was sent to advance critics to screen. Gunn, who directed Superman and wrote every episode of Peacemaker Season 2, has confirmed already that there’s an intense amount of secrecy around the final three episodes of the season, even detailing that they will lead right into the already confirmed Superman follow-up movie, Man of Tomorrow.
“Superman leads into this show and then we have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker, itโs incredibly important,โ Gunn previously told The Hollywood Reporter. โLots of guest stars coming up, lots of characters that are showing up that weโve already met in Superman. I donโt think thereโs anything that Iโve ever done that I love more than this season of Peacemaker.โ
Though the DCU has two other projects set to be released between the conclusion of Peacemaker Season 2 and the upcoming Man of Tomorrow (Supergirl will be released on June 26, 2026 and Clayface will debut on September 11, 2026), the arrival of Superman on HBO Max at this exact point in Peacemaker‘s new season is a clear indicator that the two are even more intertwined than we thought. It’s a sign from DC and James Gunn, make sure you watch (or even re-watch) this movie before you see the final episodes of Peacemaker.
