Whether you’re looking for one of the most hilarious and awkward comedies in years, or a horrifying supernatural thriller, we’ve got a couple of HBO Max suggestions for you today.
Friendship (2025)

2025 has been a great year for comedy, which is a bit surprising given how averse studios have been to the whole genre over the last decade or so. But this has been something of a comeback, led by two incredible comedies that couldn’t be more different. There’s Paramount’s Naked Gun reboot, and dark A24 comedy Friendship, the latter of which is HBO Max’s biggest title right now.
Friendship landed on HBO Max last weekend and has dominated the streamer’s movie charts every day since. That’s fantastic news, because Friendship isn’t just the best comedy of 2025, it’s one of the funniest movies released in years. Tim Robinson’s uncomfortable brand of comedy may not be for everybody, but if you’re hoping to have a laugh this weekend, Friendship needs to be at the top of your list.
The Conjuring (2013)

James Wan’s franchise-starter is possibly the most terrifying movie of the 2010s (though Sinister might give it a run for its money). Say what you will about the sequels and spinoffs, but the original Conjuring is both frightening and heartfelt, a rare combination in horror most of the time.
Fall is always a great time to dive back into The Conjuring, but this week feels especially right for another viewing. The Conjuring: Last Rites is currently in theaters, and the film will be the final entry in the Ed and Lorraine Warren saga.
Misery (1990)

Speaking of movies playing in theaters, Stephen King has a new adaptation this weekend that is causing some serious buzz. The Long Walk is a brutal film that critics and fans are enjoying much more than expected. The movie is already the highest-rated King adaptation on Rotten Tomatoes. To celebrate that release, it feels like a good time to revisit one of the other wildly acclaimed King works: Misery.
The 1990 thriller was just added to the HBO Max lineup this month and it’s the perfect viewing for a crisp, early fall evening. Kathy Bates delivers an iconic performance as she plays a fan of a famous novelist who takes her love for his work to a terrifying extreme. This is straight up one of the best King adaptations you’ll see.
