The Fate of the Furious will be full of returning fan favorites, including names like The Rock, Michelle Rodriguez, Jason Statham, and of course Vin Diesel. It will also include a few new names, though, including the talented Helen Mirren, a casting that surprised more than a few upon the announcement.

Mirren will be playing the role of Owen and Deckard Shaw’s mother, played by Luke Evans and Statham respectively. In an interview with Total Film (via Heroic Hollywood), Diesel reveals how her casting came about, and it turns out it was her idea. “People don’t know that I’m the one working for a year beforehand with the writers and coming up with the story. She came up to me at a party last year and said, ‘I want to be in Fast & Furious with you.’ The script was [already] greenlit, but she told the right person because a week later she got written in”.

Mirren will join newcomer Charlize Theron who plays Cypher in Fate of the Furious, which is currently holding a 3.50 out of 5 on ComicBook.com’s anticipation rankings. It remains to be seen whether or not Mirren’s character ends up being a full-on villain or just a meddlesome third party. Either way, it should be quite entertaining.
