James Gunn has revealed that someone at Marvel Studios wanted one of his best Marvel Cinematic Universe movies to be wildly different. Before he became co-CEO of the new DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, and the man behind celebrated DC projects Peacemaker, Superman, The Suicide Squad, Creature Commandos, and more, James Gunn became world-renowned as a regular collaborator with Marvel. Gunn managed to make one of Marvel Comics’ weirdest and most undervalued superhero teams a fan-favorite, but his MCU debut was almost ruined before it even began.

Marvel Studios introduced us to a live-action version of the Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, with James Gunn bringing his signature musicality, vibrancy, and energy to his adaptation of the unorthodox Marvel Comics team. However, Gunn has now revealed that someone at Marvel told him that “no one would like the Guardians soundtrack,” and that 1990s songs, including those by Britney Spears, should be used instead. This reveal has caused a stir among MCU fans, with the consensus being that this would have ruined Guardians of the Galaxy, but with others wanting to see “The Britney Cut” (via Reddit).
What Marvel Fans Are Saying About James Gunn’s Alternate Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel fans on this Reddit thread have overwhelmingly agreed that using 1990s songs in Guardians of the Galaxy would have been a huge mistake. Gunn is widely celebrated for cherry-picking the perfect soundtracks for his movies, especially in the Guardians of the Galaxy films in the MCU, though it’s somewhat understandable that his use of deep-cuts and lesser-known tunes may have worried executives before the premiere of the original 2014 Guardians movie. @NowWeGetSerious suggests that Gunn has “some amazing musical taste,” which is “unique and always great,” while @brycifer666 notes that Gunn is “the best there is at needle drops.”
It might have been hard for James Gunn to receive this praise had the Guardians of the Galaxy been jamming to Britney tunes. However, some disagree, and have been demanding to see “The Britney Cut.” @WrenchWanderer suggests it would have been incredible to include a scene in which “Star Lord turns to camera and says โitโs Britney, bitchโ as Ronan gets disintegrated,” while @Canazza wants to see the chase on Xandar to the tune of Spears’ “Toxic,” which would have been electrifying. “Unironically would be iconic,” says @IAmTheDayman1, so it would be great to see this hilarious edit.
Interestingly, @maxfridsvault reminds us that James Gunn may not have forgotten about this comment. 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ended with Phyla (Kai Zen) suggesting that her favorite artists are Britney Spears and the nu metal band Korn. This mention of Spears might have been the perfect reference to this comment from behind the scenes on the production of the original Guardians of the Galaxy. One thing’s for sure, we’re glad that Gunn went with his gut and delivered the now-iconic Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack that he did โ we couldn’t imagine the cosmic team without this music.
