Autobots, roll out! Netflix’s latest streaming charts have a surprisingly high entry for the Transformers franchise, suggesting positives for the Paramount series. The week was once again dominated by the unstoppable juggernaut that is KPop Demon Hunters, and new release The Thursday Murder Club, with the global top 3 rounded out by shock-doc Unknown Number: The High School Catfish, but the newly added Transformers movie actually performed better in the US.

According to Netflix’s latest chart data, 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts was the third-highest watched movie of the week in the US, and amassed a huge 12,400,000 views in its first week on the platform. To put that in context, Unknown Number: The High School Catfish – a brand new release – managed 13.6 million views. And the fifth-placed movie – another new release, The Art of Racing in the Rain, was 4 million behind on 8.1 million. With Paramount now under new ownership and looking for bigger IPs to rely on, that performance has got to be good news.

Transformers Could Be Reinvented Under Paramount’s New Owners

Paramount is making big moves after Skydance’s acquisition, including signing Will Smith up for a first-look IP deal, and claiming the rights for a new Call of Duty movie (or several). They’ve also promised renewed focus in Star Trek‘s movie series after years of silence, and it’s probably fair to assume we’ll see more from IPs like Mission: Impossible, Top Gun, and Sonic The Hedgehog. But Transformers feels like one of the properties with the biggest potential.
Rise of the Beasts took a little over $440m at the global box office, and since then, the excellent Transformers One gained critical acclaim despite flopping at the box office. With rumors of Michael Bay heading back to the franchise recently, the formula for financial success might be back in Paramount’s hands. Cracking the balance of critical acclaim and financial success so far has largely eluded the studio, with the best entries mostly under-performing – often to a frustrating degree. But the potential remains.
The Transformers movies are currently all available on Paramount+, with Transformers One also on Prime Video, and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts the only sequel available on Netflix.
