The actor’s first collaboration with Tim Burton, 1990’s Edward Scissorhands, started streaming on HBO Max on October 1st. In the movie, Depp stars as the title character, an unfinished artificial humanoid with scissor blades for hands who lives a solitary life before he is taken in by a suburban family. Now living in a pastel suburban paradise, he struggles to be seen as more than just an outcast. The movie, which grossed more than $86 million against a $20 million budget, also stars Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest, Anthony Michael Hall, Kathy Baker, Vincent Price, and Alan Arkin.
Why You Should Watch Edward Scissorhands
With a “Certified Fresh” critics’ score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, Edward Scissorhands is one of the highest-rated films for both Depp and Burton, and it’s easy to see why. Deep absolutely shines as Edward, relying almost exclusively on body language and facial expressions to provide a vulnerability and depth to the character. Depp’s soulful and beautiful performance marked a crucial turning point in his career that helped him shed his teen idol image and land more serious and dramatic roles. The film also established Burton’s signature dark, whimsical style and proved that he could craft emotionally resonant stories.
Edward Scissorhands ultimately cemented Burton and Depp’s working relationship and led to the seven films that followed, including Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Dark Shadows. The movie remains one of their best thanks to its nuanced and timeless story that puts a modern twist on a Beauty and the Beast-like fable. This time of the year is also the perfect time to revisit Edward Scissorhands. With its horror elements and setting during the Christmas season, it is a great movie to watch during both the Halloween and Christmas seasons, though it’s generally most often considered a must-watch Christmas movie.
