Bill Nighy would very much return for another Pirates movie, but it turns out he wasn’t aware that he actually already did.

Nighy played the role of Captain Davy Jones, a fixture of the Pirates of the Caribbean universe in Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End. It was in that film that Davy Jones met his fate, but fans of Dead Men Tell No Tales witnessed the still living Davy Jones after the credits. Thing is, no one told Nighy he was very much alive in the franchise (via Empire).
“The cab driver said, ‘Are you doing the next one?’”, recounts Nighy. “I said, ‘No. I didn’t know there was a next one.’ He said, ‘Well, you were in the last one’. I said, ‘No I wasn’t’. He said, ‘Yes, you were’. So that’s all I know. You probably know more than I do.”
The after credit sequence was done using all CGI, and since he didn’t speak it doesn’t seem they needed to bring him on set at all. Now that he is officially “alive”, Nighy is open to coming back for another film.
“I’d love to be in [another Pirates movie],” said Nighy. “I’d be there like a shot. But I have not been approached.”
Dead Men Tell No Tales introduced new characters and legacies for future films, and as for box office, the film brought in over $171 million domestically with a worldwide total of $789 million. It didn’t beat its predecessor, but not a bad showing at all, so a sequel is very likely at this point.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales currently enjoys a 69.23 on ComicBook.com’s composite rankings, and you can submit your score here. You can find the official description below.
“Johnny Depp returns to the big screen as the iconic, swashbuckling anti-hero Jack Sparrow in the all-new “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.” The rip-roaring adventure finds down-on-his-luck Captain Jack feeling the winds of ill-fortune blowing strongly his way when deadly ghost sailors, led by the terrifying Captain Salazer (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle bent on killing every pirate at sea โ notably Jack. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry (Brenton Thwaites), a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifull small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has never faced.”
