It goes without saying that movie productions take a lot of work, with contributions from hundreds, if not thousands, of people. And costume design is one of the most important components of big budget blockbusters.

This year's biggest geek-related releases, such as Wonder Woman, Thor: Ragnarok, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi were all recognized for their costumed contributions, with the film's talented teams being recognized for this year's Costume Designers Guild Awards.

The excellent work by Lindy Hemming (Wonder Woman), Mayes C. Rubeo (Thor: Ragnarok), and Michael Kaplan (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) will be up for the honor, alongside Jacqueline Durran (Beauty and the Beast) and Renée April (Blade Runner 2049).

The awards are broken down to categories for film and television, including Contemporary, Sci-Fi/Fantasy, and Period, as well as one for music videos.

Costumes are a huge part of the film's identity, and a major component for setting the tone of a movie. While it's more subtle in contemporary movies, superhero and sci-fi films rely on the concept designs and how they're interpreted and brought to life by the costume department.

The Star Wars franchise has long maintained a standard of excellency in this area, but now that more and more superhero films dominate at the box office, they must match the expectations of viewers. Costumes help suspend the viewer's disbelief while maintaining a sense of wonder — a delicate balance that these films deftly achieve.

The winners of the Costume Designers Guild Awards are set to be announced February 20.
