A few months ago, Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe: Reatliation, 21 Jump Street) mentioned that he would like to play the X-Men's most charming Cajun, Gambit, in a film. Well, it seems he's not the only who would like to see that. X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner told Empire Magazine that she'd love to make Tatum's wish a reality:
"I'm dying to do a Gambit movie with Channing Tatum," Shuler Donner reveals. "That doesn't have to be a great big movie. It's a thief in New Orleans, it's a whole different story. He's on board, and I have to get the studio on board. How can anyone resist Channing? He's such a sweetheart."
So it sounds like a Gambit film may be closer to happening than anyone really anticipated, though that's still not exactly close. Channing Tatum is currently working on 22 Jump Street and the film still doesn't have official studio approval, let alone a writer or director. I can see a film about a mutant that doesn't directly tie-in into mutant themed superheroics being a hard sell to the studio executives, but you never can tell. Would a Channing Tatum Gambit film actually work? It's got to do better than Taylor Kitsch's Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, right?
