Earlier today, DC Entertainment released the first look at The Splinterfolk, a bizarre-looking group of villains soon to be appearing in Jeff Lemire's Animal Man. Designed by Batman/Superman artist Jae Lee, the Splinterfolk are bizarre-looking patchwork beings who have taken on the actual, physical features of animals, helping to approximate Animal Man's powers but...you know...creepy. "Buddy Baker's life is in complete turmoil—his only son is dead, his wife has left him and taken their daughter with her, and the crushing weight of fame bears down on him in the wake of his award nomination," explained DC Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras. "Now, he must also confront the monstrosities known as the SPLINTERFOLK, extreme activists who don't want to just save animals – they want to BECOME animals! No matter how grotesque that sounds, Jae Lee's designs take the concept to an even darker place. And wait until you see how series artist Steve Pugh brings these horrific creatures to life on the page! Plus, the Splinterfolk play an integral part in the epic battle that will unfold over the coming months as writer Jeff Lemire expands Buddy's universe in new and unexpected ways … literally."
