Today the cast list for Showtime's forthcoming event series Twin Peaks was released, and with over 200 names on the list, it looks like fans are going to get to see more of the town (and The Black Lodge?) than ever before.

There's a lot to unpack in the casting list -- which doesn't actually give character names, just confirms the participation of actors -- but one of the most notable things is the way geek culture is represented in the series.

Twin Peaks is one of the cultiest of cult TV favorites, one of the defining entries in the "cancelled too soon" roll call and a series whose bizarre structure, cinematic style, and embrace of the "mytharc" have influenced TV in the decades since it first aired. So while it's ostensibly a police procedural and was a mainstream ratings hit in the days before geek culture was king, it's pretty common to find comic book writers, genre directors and the like point to Twin Peaks as a standard-bearer.

Among the dozens of names on the list (reprinted in full below) are Ant-Man's David Dastmalchian, The X-Files's David Duchovny, Scooby-Doo's Matthew Lillard, Heroes and iZombie baddie Robert Knepper, The Matrix franchise's Monica Bellucci, Constantine's Jeremy Davies, Scott Pilgim Vs. the World's Michael Cera, Ghostbusters's Ernie Hudson, and more.

Hudson's a fun addition because he played Gus's dad on Psych, whose Twin Peaks homage episode "Dual Spires" also starred about a dozen former Twin Peaks actors, which means his joining this cast builds up your "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game.

Besides the fanboy-friendly names, it's worth noting some of the folks coming back to reprise their roles -- including Duchovny, whose Denise Bryson was a transgender character who had previously been Dennis, and the late Catherine E. Coulson, who played The Log Lady.

Also interesting are some of the totally new faces in Twin Peaks, including Veronica Mars's own "Laura Palmer," Amanda Seyfried; Mallrats and My Name is Earl's Ethan Supplee; and The Hateful Eight's Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Written and produced by series creators and executive producers David Lynch and Mark Frost, the new Twin Peaks is directed entirely by David Lynch, and will premiere on Showtime in 2017, on-air, on demand and over the internet.
