Guardians Of The Galaxy passes Iron Man

In a big success for a movie starring some obscure Marvel comic book characters, Guardians of the Galaxy has now passed the first Iron Man movie at the domestic box office to become Marvel Studios third highest grossing movie of all time in the U.S.

Over the weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy grossed an estimated $3.8 million at the domestic box office, which brought the film's total domestic gross to $319.2 million. It was more than enough to pass Iron Man, which ended its domestic run with a total gross of $318.41 million.

At the domestic box office, Guardians of the Galaxy now only trails The Avengers and Iron Man 3 in regards to Marvel Studios film. The Avengers is the highest grossing Marvel Studios film ever with a $623.4 million total gross at the domestic box office, and Iron Man 3 is Marvel Studios' second highest grossing film with a $409 million total gross at the domestic box office.

While it's extremely unlikely that Guardians of the Galaxy will pass either The Avengers or Iron Man 3, the film will be able to lay claim to being Marvel Studios highest grossing domestic release starring completely new characters to the big screen. Iron Man 3 was of course a sequel to the previous two Iron Man movies, and while The Avengers wasn't technically a sequel, it starred characters who had been introduced in previous Marvel Studios films.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is scheduled to be released in movie theaters on July 28, 2017.
