The Walking Dead Economy

CNBC introduced a segment on the Closing Bell about The Walking Dead by suggesting that the show had helped various stocks. CNBC pointed out that stock prices were up for AMC which airs the show, Netflix which streams the show, and Activision Blizzard which makes a game based on the show. However, when Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman appeared, the first thing he was asked about was his theory on how the financial crisis might have helped The Walking Dead. Robert Kirkman said, "Well, I think that the last time zombies were this popular or were anywhere close to this popular would be the eighties at the height of the cold war, so I think that economic unrest and social, political bad stuff usually just makes people gravitate towards material that makes them feel a little bit better about the current state of everybody's lives." Kirkman continued, "I think that now people are worrying about how to pay their mortgage and worrying about how they are going to afford groceries, and it's nice to sit down on the couch and watch a simpler time when people are just worried about being chased by zombies." When pressed on if he had any proof that the poor economic environment had helped the show, Kirkman explained, "I do hear from a lot of people who say that it does make them feel a little bit better to see somebody at odds with a threat that is…you know, in a fictional story, it's much more serious, it's much more dire, it makes people feel better about 'oh, I'm just worried about my economic situation, I'm not worried about getting eaten by monsters.'" At the end of the  segment, the rising stock price of AMC was once again brought up. When Kirkman was asked if he would attribute the rising AMC stock price to The Walking Dead, Kirkman joked, "I'm not going to take credit for that, but yes, absolutely it's just the walking dead, it's the only thing that's driving the stock up." Now, here's an interesting question. If The Walking Dead helps drive stock prices up and thus speeds up the economic recovery, then will the show start to become less popular as the economy improves? And if the show suffers, will it drive back down stock prices, once again collapsing the economy? Could The Walking Dead create a never ending cycle of economic fluctuation?
