For four seasons, Jessica Lange was the cornerstone of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's anthology series, American Horror Story, portraying Constance Langdon in "Murder House," Sister Jude in "Asylum," Fiona Goode in "Coven," and Elsa Mars in "Freak Show." Despite being beloved by fans and showered with praise from critics, Lange chose not to return for "Hotel," so that she could do a Broadway play. Now the award-winning actress has confirmed that she won't ever return to the series, saying four seasons of American Horror Story was plenty.

"I had four years with that, four seasons, and each year was a marvelous character," Lange explained to Charlie Rose. "Everything changed from one year to another which made it very interesting to me. But no, I think sometimes you come to the end of something and it has had its natural—"

Rose then added, "But, I mean, people loved you in that." To which Lange replied, "I know, I know, it's funny."

This comes as a bit of surprise since Murphy had said last year that Lange would more thank likely be back.

"I've been talking to her," Murphy told Entertainment Weekly. "It's always possible. I'm trying to deal with her play schedule. Jessica is always about the character. She'll be back—she's not gone forever." Murphy continued with how he tries to keep things "fun and fresh" with the show. "Sometimes somebody has to go away before you realize how much you miss them. She wants to come back we just have to come up with something."

American Horror Story Season 6 will debut next fall.
