Marc Web will not direct 2018's planned The Amazing Spider-Man 4 for Sony, the director said in an interview. With two more movies already on the schedule in the Amazing Spider-Man series but star Andrew Garfield having already expressed that he'll be finished after he wraps the "trilogy" he's already contracted for, many fans have wondered whether director Marc Webb would take that opportunity to make his exit, as well, or if he would try to stay on, recast and make a go at putting his stamp on whatever comes next. He'd actually like to split the difference a bit, it seems. "I'd like to be involved as a consultant," Marc Webb told The Daily Beast. "I've already talked to these guys about it, but in terms of directing it, that will close out my tenure. I've had so much fun doing it, but after the third movie, it'll be the time to find something else." Webb nearly didn't make it into The Amazing Spider-Man 2, because he owed 20th Century Fox a movie as part of the contract for his first feature, (500) Days of Summer. Word is, he ended up agreeing to direct two movies for Fox instead of just one in order to buy a little flexibility in his contract and stick around to see the Amazing trilogy through to its conclusion. Recently, Webb signed up for Cold Comfort, a spy thriller at Fox which will presumably either succeed The Amazing Spider-Man 2 or have a short, indie film-style shoot before Webb begins work on the next Spidey sequel (smart money is on the former). Cold Comfort is the true account of an American civilian-turned-self-taught spy, who worked with the FBI to bring down a Russian intelligence agent on American soil. The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is due in theaters on June 10, 2016.
