Yesterday, the Hollywood Reporter reported that the next Bourne movie had been delayed until 2016 in order to clear room on the schedule for Straight Outta Compton, a film about the history of gangsta rap group, the N.W.A.

A new report from the Latino Review claims that the real reason the film was delayed was to allow for the return of the series' original lead, Matt Damon, as Jason Bourne. Damon played Bourne in the series' first three installments, but left the franchise and was replaced by Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye in The Avengers) as Aaron Cross for the fourth film, The Bourne Legacy, in 2012.

Damon has previously stated that he would only return to the franchise if Paul Greengrass, director of The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, also returned. The report suggests that the dissapointing performance of Damon's recent films may have convinced him to work with the fifth film's director, Jason Lin, instead.

The original Hollywood Reporter article states that Jeremy Renner is expected to return as Aaron Cross in the lead. If Damon does return, perhaps we'll see Bourne and Cross working with, or against, each other.

The fifth Bourne movie is now scheduled for release on July 15, 2016.
