Fans eager to see what Neill Blomkamp's vision is for Alien 5 will have to wait a bit longer, as the project has officially been put on the back burner.

Actress Sigourney Weaver, who plays the iconic Ellen Ripley in the franchise, recently confirmed as much during her appearance at Spain's San Sebastian Festival, where Weaver will be the recipient of a career achievement Donostia Award (via Variety).

"He has got work to do, and I have things going on. I hope we do get to do it," she said. "It's one of those things we wanted to do this past year, but I think Ridley [Scott] didn't want them all coming out at the same time."

She's referring to Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant, formerly known as Prometheus 2. The film is set for an October 6th release in 2017, and they likely wanted to avoid any confusion with Alien 5. While it might be a bit farther out than everyone had hoped, Weaver is still hopeful to get going on the project soon, as by her account the script is quite stellar.

"There is an incredible script by Neill," Weaver said (via screenrant). "I didn't want to do a fifth one. I thought going to earth wouldn't be fun. I got this script that was amazing and gives fans everything they're looking for and innovates in ways that became part of the world for me. He has things to do and I have things to do. And I hope that we'll circle back around to do it once those things are done."

Blomkamp doesn't have an official project announced at the moment, but he has recently teased one. You can view the official description for Alien: Covenant below, and once that starts to near completion, hopefully, we'll see more forward progress from Alien 5.

Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created in Alien with Alien: Covenant, the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with Prometheus -- and connects directly to Scott's 1979 seminal work of science fiction. Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world -- whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.
