Coming later this year is the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the second of three films that were announced back in 2012, and in a little over a year, the untitled Han Solo film will be hitting theaters. Once these two films are released, Episode IX will be the last film to be released in the slew of films confirmed to be getting made when Disney purchased Lucasfilm, leading fans to wonder what's next. Disney CEO Bob Iger recently gave a talk at USC that shed light on where the saga will go next, details about the new Han Solo film, and how Episode VIII will handle Carrie Fisher's role in the iconic actress' passing.

With Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, one of the biggest surprises, which was also one of the most controversial decisions, was the inclusion of CG characters. The Star Wars franchise is no stranger to characters created entirely in a computer, but this was the first time the technology was used to bring back characters who were originally portrayed by humans.
Considering the tragic passing of Carrie Fisher at the end of last year, and since Rogue One already brought a young Carrie Fisher to the big screen, many people have been wondering how her passing would affect Last Jedi and whether her character would be changed our edited to reflect her absence in Episode IX.
"When we bought Lucasfilm, we were going to make three films — Episodes VII, VIII and IX," Iger explained. "We had to deal tragedy at the end of 2016. Carrie appears throughout VIII. We are not changing VIII to deal with her passing. Her performance remains as it is in VIII. In Rogue One, we had some digital character. We are not doing that with Carrie."
Iger also went on to discuss what the future holds for Star Wars, since the initial slate of films is wrapping up. "We're starting talk about what could happen after Episode IX. About what could be another decade-and-a-half of Star Wars stories," says Iger.
When the topic turned to the upcoming Han Solo film, Iger revealed some interesting new details. "We're actually shooting now an origin story of Han Solo, which will come out in 2018," Iger revealed. "That picks up with Han Solo when he was 18 years old and takes him through when he was 24. There are a few significant things that happen in Han Solo's life, like acquiring a certain vehicle and meeting a certain Wookiee that will happen in this film. But you will also discover how he got his name."
There has been some debate about whether the phrase "how he got his name" literally means he had a name prior to "Han Solo" or if it was Iger's way of saying "How he made a name for himself," but that's anyone's guess.
