We recently reported on the massive surge in hype surrounding Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – hype that was best embodied by the film's official ticket presales flooding into Fandango.

Now we have an update to that story that shows just how many tickets Rogue One has sold, and it's an impressive number!

Rogue One Star Wars Story Sells Hundres Thousands Presale Tickets

Fandango released an official statement (via LA Times), stating that, "Last night, Fandango saw extraordinary demand for tickets to 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.' Within minutes of going on sale, we sold hundreds of thousands of tickets."

It's almost funny to think that some fans still consider the hype behind Rogue One to be underwhelming. While the movie - which kicks off the new Star Wars "standalone film" venture - may not have the massive cultural impact that Star Wars: The Force Awakens did just a year ago, the comparison is kind of an absurd one to make.

As stated, Force Awakens was a bonafide cultural event. It was, as once:

  1. The return of Star Wars to the big screen for the first time in a decade.
  2. The return of the OT cast members to the film franchise.
  3. The first Star Wars movie released under Disney and without George Lucas involved.
  4. The beginning of a whole new trilogy in the Skywalker Saga.

Rogue One, by comparison is none of the above. Take away the Star Wars brand name and links to OT nostalgia and what you essentially have is an exciting sci-fi war/espionage film. And as much as the Star Wars name carries weight, it's doubtful we'd see this level of response if the trailers and TV spots for Rogue One we're building hype on the strength of the footage shown.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits US theaters December 16, 2016. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it's the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core "Skywalker Saga" of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue One tells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star. The story spins directly off the opening crawl from the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. In that crawl, it read: "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet."
