However, one thing we haven’t seen, it who Negan was before the world fell apart? Was he a car salesman? Was he an athlete? Was he a school teacher? Comic book fans know the answer to that question and, in case you weren’t sure, executive producer of The Walking Dead David Alpert is pointing fans to the source material for that information.
In a recent episode of Talking Dead, Alpert was asked by host Chris Hardwick where Negan’s precious Lucille got her name.
“You guys did a separate comic about Negan,” Hardwick pointed out. “For the Governor, there was the Governor, and then for Negan there was a little bit of a comic.”
“It’s a series of shorts that was sort of collected into a backstory of [Negan] that gives a little bit of info as to where that might come from,” Alpert said.
The comic in reference is Here’s Negan. The 48-page story is currently being printed by Image Comics in their Image+ magazine in 4-page increments each month. The story is printed inside each new issue the publisher’s preview magazine.
So far, Negan’s backstory from Here’s Negan has revealed him to be a gym teacher prior to the apocalypse, who enjoyed beating his students in ping pong and using relentlessly harsh language in an effort to both toughen the kids up and look like the cool teacher. The cool teacher, however, wasn’t such a cool guy to his wife. At the beginning of his story, Negan is having an affair but quickly cuts it off upon learning his wife has a terminal illness.
For the rest of his wife’s days, he spends as much time with her as he can and tries to heal both her and his guilt over his choices in their relationship. Just as the world begins to fall apart, Negan sits beside his wife in the hospital as she dies. With the zombie virus in full effect, she startles him upon reanimating.
Negan’s wife name was Lucille.
